Islets, Lake and Granada Highlights

FULLDAY TOUR ISLETS, LAKE AND GRANADA HIGHLIGHTS

We meet at your hotel in Granada or Managua and from here we reach the downtown of the Granada, also called the great Sultan. Our tour begins in one of the oldest streets of the city, at the perimeter walls of la Polvora, a fortress built by the Spaniards in 1748. Our friendly guide will illustrate the history of this building, which expresses the troubled history of the country. We continue with one of the most important areas that tells us a lot about the history of Granada: the church of Xalteva and the ancient surrounding walls.

Although not everyone knows, Nicaragua has become one of the leading producers of cigars in the world, which are of the highest quality. During the tour we bring you inside a local factory to see a hands-on demonstration of the artisanal skills of these men and women (the visit is available only from Monday to Friday) Let’s continue with the church of La Merced where we reach the top of the bell tower to enjoy a wonderful view over the red roofs of the town.

Then, we get to know the life of the local community through the chaotic market with its stalls where everything is sold: food, appliances, furniture, auto parts, crafts … and, of course, the colorful and exquisite seasonal fruit. We head to the heart of Granada, dominated by the cathedral and the central park, which has always been a meeting place for local families. The historic center of Granada is the most typical expression of colonial architecture perfectly preserved up to the present day.

In the afternoon we head to the port of Granada for a boat ride on the Nicaragua lake along some of the 365 small islands (isletas) in front of the city. They are very small islands, some inhabited, others deserted, often covered by vegetation and populated by various species of birds and monkeys. Freshwater sharks are the peculiarity of this lake. We visit an island where the Spaniards had built a small fort to repel the English navy and pirates. So we land on another island where we can enjoy the last rays of the sun on the lake and drink something before returning to the port and from there to the city center.
